Crypto Confidential: Winning and Losing Millions in the New Frontier of Finance Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 293 ratings

THE WILD INSIDE STORY OF CRYPTO'S GET-RICH-QUICK UNDERBELLY

Nat Eliason had six months to make as much money as possible before his first child was born. So, he turned to where countless others did in 2021: Crypto.

Within a year, he'd made millions writing code holding hundreds of millions of dollars of other people's money. He'd been hacked. He'd sold a picture of a monkey for two hundred grand. He'd become an influencer, speaking at conferences, and writing a weekly newsletter to tens of thousands of fans. Best of all, Nat had amassed a small fortune. But how much of this money was even real? And how many times can someone double down before they eventually lose everything?

Crypto Confidential is Nat's unfiltered, insider's account of the hyperactive, hyper-speculative, hyper-addictive, nearly unregulated, completely insane world being built on the blockchain. A behind-the-scenes exposé of the bull runs and breakdowns, revealing exactly how the crypto-sausage gets made. A story of getting rich, going broke, scamming and getting scammed— and how we can all be more educated participants during the inevitable next bull run.

Editorial Reviews

Review

PRAISE FOR CRYPTO CONFIDENTIAL

"Eliason’s anecdotes are both entertaining and instructive, and unlike many books on Bitcoin et al., this one doesn’t require background in either computers or economics. More useful, and worth the price of admission, are his notes on the warning signs of disaster… Essential reading for anyone playing—or thinking of playing—in the crypto sandbox."
Kirkus Reviews (starred)

"If you’re looking for a great story that also educates you on the currency world ahead, buy this book... Eliason explains it better than anyone."
Forbes

“A riveting insider’s account of the cryptocurrency casino. It’s funny, honest, and moving in equal measure—a true triumph for a book about bits and bytes.”
Jimmy Soni, author of The Founders

“A great look from the trenches to understand the good and bad of cryptocurrency from the inside out.”

Reid Hoffman, entrepreneur (PayPal, LinkedIn), partner at Greylock, and host of Masters of Scale

“The crypto industry has no shortage of scandal, and yet the allure of its potential persists for many. Nat Eliason’s book is a riveting, personal account of what happens when you get sucked in—for good and bad. I couldn’t put it down.”
Zoë Schiffer, managing editor of Platformer, author of Extremely Hardcore

“As someone who used to work in crypto, Nat’s book really resonated with me—the search for meaning, the questioning, the wondering if things really can be better . . . and the disappointment when it isn’t. The book is soulful and a beautiful exploration of an industry that should ask more of itself.”
Kyla Scanlon, financial educator, author of In This Economy?

“My only crypto-take is that if you don’t find some of it inspiring, you’re not paying attention, and if you don’t find a lot of it absurd, you’re not paying attention. Nat Eliason brilliantly captures both ends in Crypto Confidential. Every investor should read this book.”
Morgan Housel, author of The Psychology of Money and Same as Ever

“Crypto Confidential is the perfect way to understand the culture of the crypto craze. Fast-paced and informative, newcomers will be shocked and veterans will feel seen.”
Eric Jorgenson, author of The Almanack of Naval Ravikant

“A gripping narrative on the highs, lows, and inner workings of cryptocurrency. Part thriller and part educational, I found it hard to put the book down as I had to know how it all ends.”
Nick Maggiuilli, author of Just Keep Buying

"Like
Ready Player One and The Social Network, but with an underlying, Liam Neeson 'just trying to protect my family' vibe. It's really f#@*% good."
Nathan Baschez, founder of Lex

Some of the best nonfiction I've ever read 🤯

Some of the best nonfiction I've ever read 🤯
Was fortunate enough to read a pre-release copy. I felt like I knew about the next mega-hit before it went mainstream... Overall, I loved it. As a participant in the mania (employed at major Bitcoin companies during the same time period as the book covers), I thoroughly enjoyed reliving those chaotic ups and downs of the 2021 hype cycle. I had many many, "I remember exactly where I was and what I was doing when that happened" moments while reading. Very cool to have a behind the scenes into someone who was playing the same games, but taking MUCH larger swings than I was at the time. Well written, and hopefully indicative of more long-form to come from Nat. Will definitely be recommending to friends and family. I've read Nat's blog for years and this book exceeded all expectations!

Incredible book and story. Further evidence that truth is stranger than fiction! Hunter Thompson style Gonzo journalism, except it's all true. Exposes all the good, bad and truly sleazy of crypto world. I found myself cheering for his and his long-suffering wife's success. Very exciting and well-written, absolutely buy this book.
But wait, this review might be a pump and dump scheme. I might be getting a commission on every copy sold, jacking it up until the lousy truth comes through with a deluge of bad reviews LOLOL. This and the latest memecoin......the truth is all on the blockchain.

i got this book the day it debuted. a lot of praise on social media that week mentioned how "quickly" other readers got through the chapters thanks to Nat's pace and storytelling.

my experience was different -- i read Crypto Confidential *slowly.* i could only handle a few pages at a time because it fully transported me back to the 2021-2022 crypto hype cycle. similar to Nat i stopped what i was doing and learned Solidity. similar to Nat i launched tokens, NFTs, and a smart contract agency.

Nat captured this once-a-generation period so accurately that it hurt to relive it. and that's what makes Crypto Confidential a great book. Nat is driving, you are in the passenger seat, and there is no tint on any of the windows. you are in a convertible; there are no windows. you get to see, smell, and feel the same things. the same greed, the same regret, the same second order consequences that being overzealous at work can have on your home life. chapter after chapter.

in between Nat's narrative you are offered some reprieve: a collection of interstitial pages with "Confidential" written all over them. these sections zoom the reader out of the subjective moment, into the objective reality. here Nat explains what was actually going on behind the scenes of each concept governing his decision making at that time. kind of an inline glossary but better. forget i said glossary.

anyway. i hope Nat's next book doesn't remind me of my own mistakes, and i hope his next book describes a field about which i know nothing. but i'm grateful for the kick in the pants Crypto Confidential gave me, and if you have a dusty OpenSea account or Metamask wallet, you will be too.

This book was suggested to me by a friend. I like nonfiction, but have had little interest in Crypto. I was sucked in from the first chapter as Nat's story is dramatic. The intervening chapters giving details about how the world of Crypto works were clear and added to the suspense of the story as I realized how this information reflected the potential difficulty of Nat's position. The ethics of Crypto trading is also fascinating. He brings it all to a satisfying conclusion. His skill at storytelling is wonderful. Will look for his future books. Recommended!

I read this book in 2 sittings. I couldn't put it down. If you are new to crypto - this is the easiest to understand, but written like a thriller - a piece of art. So easy to read and understand. In a way, very inspiring to think outside the box and expose you to the crypto world (especially if you feel left out).

The author takes you on an exciting real life adventure of his deep dive into the world decentralized financing and crypto-currencies where fortunes have been amassed and lost. In addition to the sheer thrill of the story, the author's journey imparts valuable, easy to digest knowledge for navigating the new digital finance world that appears to be here to stay - blockchain, Ethereum, Defi, NFTs, stable coins, tokens, farming, wallets, private keys, seed phrase, solidity, and more. I recommend you buy the audio version to just enjoy the exciting story behind the lessons learned (read by the author), and buy the book to have a useful reference guide to the new language of digital finance. So fun!

Nat does an excellent job interweaving a captivating story with actionable crypto knowledge. It's funny because I project that had been sidelined for 2+ years that I had bought into went live while I was reading this book, so I knew exactly how to approach it and it helped me make better informed decisions on cashing out. Highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning how to navigate the next wave of crypto mania!

    An entertaining and educational read.
